In a significant step toward restoring peace in the Maoist-affected regions of Chhattisgarh, 51 Maoists surrendered before the local authorities and vowed to abandon violence as part of the state’s rehabilitation and surrender initiative.
The surrender took place in Dantewada district, one of the most sensitive areas of the Bastar region, known for its long-standing Maoist insurgency.
Part of the ‘Lone Varatu’ Campaign
Officials confirmed that the move was part of the ‘Lone Varatu’ (Return Home) campaign launched by the state police, which encourages Maoists to lay down arms and return to mainstream life through dialogue and rehabilitation.
Since its launch, the initiative has seen hundreds of Maoists surrender, including several carrying cash rewards on their heads.
“We welcome these individuals back to society. They were assured of safety, financial assistance, and livelihood support under the surrender policy,” said a senior police officer from Dantewada.
Weapons and Materials Recovered
During the surrender, the Maoists handed over country-made weapons, explosives, and communication equipment.
Officials stated that several of the surrendered individuals were involved in minor roles such as informers, logistics handlers, and local cadre support, though a few had active involvement in past attacks.
The recovered materials are being examined for potential intelligence leads.
Rehabilitation Support and Integration
Under the state’s rehabilitation framework, surrendered Maoists will receive:
Immediate monetary aid for surrendering.
Skill training and livelihood support through government programs.
Education and healthcare assistance for their families.
Authorities added that rehabilitation officers and local NGOs are helping reintegrate them into community life.
Background: Peace Push in Bastar
The Chhattisgarh government, with assistance from central security forces, has been pursuing a dual strategy of development and dialogue to counter insurgency in the Bastar zone.
While combing operations continue in core forest zones, the administration is also focusing on employment, infrastructure, and social inclusion to weaken Maoist influence.
The ‘Lone Varatu’ campaign, launched in 2020, has been instrumental in convincing Maoists — especially lower-rung cadres — to return to the mainstream, offering them a fresh start.
Analyst View
Experts believe such surrenders reflect a shift in ground sentiment as development reaches previously neglected tribal regions. However, they caution that long-term peace will depend on sustained governance and trust-building with local communities.
