On November 21, 2025, a powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh, leading to the tragic loss of at least six lives, according to official and media sources. The tremor, centered near Narsingdi district, was also felt strongly across Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal, prompting widespread panic among residents.

What Happened: Earthquake Details & Impact

The quake struck at around 10:08 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located near Narsingdi, roughly 13 km south-southwest of the city, at a depth of 10 km

According to Bangladesh authorities, at least six people died

The fatalities reportedly include three people from structural collapse (walls or roofs) and three pedestrians struck by collapsing railings

Numerous others sustained injuries as building materials fell and panic gripped the streets.

In West Bengal, tremors were felt across Kolkata, as well as in districts like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Cooch Behar, and Uttar Dinajpur.

In Kolkata, people reported feeling a jolt around 10:10 a.m., leading many to rush outside in alarm.

Officials in West Bengal said there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties within the state.

Why Kolkata Feels the Quake Strongly

Seismic experts note that even though the quake’s epicentre was in Bangladesh, the proximity to densely populated urban zones like Kolkata magnifies its perceptibility.

Kolkata's ground conditions — including soft soil and water-logged substrata in many parts of the city — can amplify tremors, making shaking feel stronger than in more stable regions.

The depth of the earthquake (shallow, ~10 km) also contributes to stronger surface shaking.

Immediate Response & Safety Measure

Residents across Kolkata evacuated high-rise buildings as a precaution.

Local authorities and disaster response teams are assessing buildings for potential cracks or structural damage.

Public alerts are being issued to remain calm, avoid crowded elevators, and stay in open spaces until aftershocks are ruled out.
