Nepal Earthquake Today: 7.1 Magnitude Quake Hits Kathmandu, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR
A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal early Tuesday morning, sending tremors across North India, including Delhi-NCR and parts of Bihar. The earthquake, which occurred at 6:35 AM IST, was recorded 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Widespread Impact in North India and Nepal
Residents in Bihar reported strong tremors, prompting many to rush out of their homes and apartments. Fortunately, no significant damage to property has been reported so far. Emergency response teams in both Nepal and India are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to remain calm and prepared for potential aftershocks.
Seismically Active Region
Nepal is situated in a highly seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, forming the Himalayan mountain range. This geological setting frequently results in earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
Lobuche: Close to the Epicenter
Lobuche, a village in Nepal located near the Khumbu Glacier and approximately 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu, is situated about 8.5 kilometers southwest of Everest Base Camp. The earthquake's epicenter was identified in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), near the Nepal border, with coordinates of latitude 28.86° N and longitude 87.51° E, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
Series of Earthquakes in the Region
In addition to the initial quake, two subsequent tremors were recorded in the region later in the morning:
Magnitude 4.7: Recorded at 7:02 AM IST, with an epicenter at latitude 28.60° N and longitude 87.68° E, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Magnitude 4.9: Occurred at 7:07 AM IST, with an epicenter at latitude 28.68° N and longitude 87.54° E, at a depth of 30 kilometers.
The NCS confirmed these events through a tweet, stating: “EQ of M: 7.1, On: 07/01/2025 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 87.51 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xizang.”
Preparedness and Response
Authorities in Nepal and India have activated emergency protocols to address any potential aftershocks and ensure public safety. While the initial reports indicate no significant damage, the proximity of the epicenter to densely populated areas necessitates ongoing vigilance.
