Adani Group Unveils India’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Project — A Major Step Toward 24×7 Green Power

Vizzve Admin

The Adani Group has announced its foray into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with the launch of India’s largest grid-scale energy storage project, marking a pivotal move in the country’s renewable energy transition.

The project involves the deployment of more than 700 advanced battery storage containers — making it not only India’s largest BESS installation but also among the world’s biggest single-location deployments of its kind.

 Project Overview

The new BESS project will support India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy grid, providing peak-hour power balancing, grid stability, and frequency regulation.

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL), the infrastructure and transmission arm of the Adani Group, confirmed that the project will integrate advanced lithium-ion technology designed for long-duration energy storage and improved round-trip efficiency.

“Battery Energy Storage will be a cornerstone of India’s clean energy mission. This project reinforces our commitment to sustainable and reliable grid solutions,” an Adani Group spokesperson said.

The installation is expected to provide over 1,000 MWh (megawatt-hours) of energy storage capacity once fully operational.

Strategic Importance for India’s Power Sector

India’s renewable capacity has crossed 200 GW, but the lack of large-scale energy storage has been a major hurdle in balancing intermittent power generation from solar and wind sources.

The Adani BESS initiative aligns with the Government of India’s National Energy Storage Mission (NESM), which aims to install 47 GW of BESS capacity by 2030.

The project will enable time-shifting of renewable energy, allowing excess solar power generated during the day to be used at night — a critical step toward 24×7 clean power delivery.

“This is a major leap in India’s decarbonization pathway and energy security goals,” said an energy analyst at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).

 Technology and Execution

The project will deploy next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, engineered for enhanced thermal stability, lifespan, and recyclability.
Each of the 700+ BESS containers will be digitally monitored for real-time performance, temperature, and charge-discharge cycles, ensuring maximum grid efficiency.

Adani Energy Solutions has partnered with global technology providers and EPC firms specializing in battery management systems, grid integration, and energy software analytics.

Construction and commissioning are expected to be completed within 24 months, with the system directly connected to the national grid for frequency management and renewable load balancing.

 Adani’s Clean Energy Ambition

The BESS project is part of Adani’s broader plan to invest over $10 billion in clean energy and green infrastructure.
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) already operates over 8,500 MW of renewable capacity, with a target of 45 GW by 2030.

With this move, the Group strengthens its position across the entire renewable energy value chain — from solar and wind generation to energy transmission and storage.

“Adani’s entry into large-scale BESS marks India’s readiness for grid modernization. It’s the missing link in India’s clean power roadmap,” said an energy economist from TERI.
