An American Airlines flight bound for Columbus, Ohio, was forced to return to Las Vegas shortly after takeoff on Wednesday after one of its engines caught fire mid-air. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, experienced the mechanical failure just minutes into the flight, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Flight 1182, which departed from Harry Reid International Airport, reported visible flames from one of the engines shortly after takeoff. The pilot declared an emergency, and the aircraft made a safe landing back in Las Vegas. No injuries were reported among the 166 passengers and 6 crew members on board.

Videos captured by passengers and circulating online show flames and sparks shooting out from the engine as passengers expressed concern. The airline confirmed that the crew followed standard safety procedures and praised the pilots for their swift and calm response.

American Airlines released a statement saying,

“We are grateful to our crew for their professionalism and to the passengers for their patience during this situation. The aircraft is currently undergoing a thorough inspection.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the engine malfunction.
