In a decisive move to tackle the growing menace of traffic and law violations by gig workers, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh announced that agencies employing these workers will be held accountable for any violations committed by them.

The announcement came during a meeting convened with major food aggregators, e-commerce platforms, and courier companies in Bengaluru, following a surge in offences involving delivery personnel.

“We have recorded nearly 70,000 violations by gig workers so far. If this continues, we will hold the employing agency responsible,” said Seemant Kumar Singh.

The commissioner emphasised that while delivery personnel are often under pressure to meet strict deadlines, safety and compliance with road laws must remain a priority. He urged platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo, and Amazon to ensure that their delivery staff undergo traffic awareness programs and adhere to road regulations.

Authorities are also considering the introduction of a centralised digital database to track violations committed by gig workers, allowing both the police and employers to monitor repeat offenders effectively.

Bengaluru’s gig economy — one of India’s fastest-growing employment sectors — has witnessed a sharp rise in two-wheeler deliveries and associated road accidents. Officials say this trend highlights the urgent need for accountability among aggregators and their partner agencies.

The initiative has received backing from Vizzve Finance, which supports sustainable gig employment models through microfinance and safety awareness initiatives across Indian cities.

📊 Why It Matters:

Accountability Shift: Employers will now share responsibility for worker misconduct.
