In a strong statement upholding India’s secular fabric, the Supreme Court of India has asserted that associating Hindi with Hindus and Urdu with Muslims poses a serious threat to national unity and communal harmony. The apex court emphasized that languages are cultural assets and should not be compartmentalized along religious lines.
The observation came during a hearing on a plea related to communal tensions stemming from linguistic divides. The court noted that such stereotypes can deepen communal rifts, and reiterated the constitutional vision of unity in diversity.
"Believing Hindi is for Hindus and Urdu is for Muslims is a blow to the idea of unity," the bench stated.
Meanwhile, in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stirred a political debate by calling the recent violence in Murshidabad district "pre-planned". Addressing the media on Tuesday, Banerjee claimed that the unrest was not spontaneous and alleged external involvement aimed at destabilizing the state ahead of the elections.
“The Murshidabad incident was not accidental. It was strategically executed to incite communal tension,” she said.
The violence, which erupted over a religious procession, led to several injuries and instances of arson. Investigations are ongoing, and several arrests have been made. Opposition parties, however, have accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order.
These two developments — a judicial warning against communalizing language and a political face-off over alleged communal violence — underscore the fragile interplay between language, religion, and politics in India.
