Chicken Kebabs from Empire Restaurant in Bengaluru Declared ‘Unsafe’ by State Food Safety Authority
Bengaluru’s popular Empire Restaurant chain has come under scrutiny after its chicken kebabs served at the Gandhinagar and Anand Rao Circle outlets were declared unsafe for human consumption by the State Food Laboratory, Public Health Institute. The findings are based on tests conducted on samples collected during a routine inspection on June 27, 2025.
Key Details of the Food Safety Violation
Food Safety Officer Ambarish Gowda collected 2 kilograms of chicken kebab samples (four packets of 500 grams each) from Empire’s Anand Rao Circle branch.
Testing conducted by the State Food Laboratory revealed that the kebabs failed to comply with the Food Product Standards & Food Additives Regulations, 2011.
The kebabs were found to contain unauthorized artificial food coloring agents, including banned colors like Sunset Yellow, which violate food safety norms.
Based on these findings, the chicken kebabs were officially declared “unsafe for human consumption” under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Following the test report dated July 11, 2025, the BBMP Food Safety and Drug Administration (North Zone) issued a formal notice to the Empire outlets, granting them 30 days to respond.
The restaurant has been offered the option to request a second round of testing at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru, but at their own expense.
Restaurant’s Response
Empire Group’s CEO, Shakir, confirmed receipt of the notice and stated that the restaurant has discontinued the use of food coloring in their kebabs.
He emphasized that quality is a priority for the chain, though declined to comment on the detailed aspects of the case.
