India reaffirmed its climate commitment on the global stage as Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav delivered a strong address at the UN COP30 Climate Summit in Belem, Brazil, stressing that climate change is no longer a distant warning but a present-day reality. He described it as “real and imminent”, driven largely by unsustainable consumption patterns, developmental pressure, and natural resource overexploitation witnessed globally.
During his address at the high-level segment, the minister announced that India will formally declare its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement by December, signaling continued alignment with global climate targets and responsibility-driven sustainable development.
Yadav emphasised that while developing economies continue to balance growth with environmental responsibility, they must not be burdened unfairly, given that historical emissions and industrial-age pollution were largely driven by developed nations. He reiterated India’s stance on climate justice and equity, noting that shared responsibilities must also reflect differentiated capacities.
He also highlighted India’s ongoing and future efforts centred around renewable energy expansion, climate-resilient agriculture, afforestation, circular economy, green hydrogen, and sustainable infrastructure frameworks. The minister stated that India remains committed to climate-positive development pathways, as evidenced by major national missions and large-scale clean-energy transitions already underway.
