CM Stalin Urges Centre to Secure Release of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Detained by Sri Lanka
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has urged the Union Minister for External Affairs to intervene immediately and secure the release of a group of Tamil Nadu fishermen from Mayiladuthurai district who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on November 9, 2025.
The fishermen, who ventured into the sea for regular fishing operations, were allegedly detained by Sri Lankan authorities for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Reports indicate that their fishing boat has also been seized and taken to a Sri Lankan naval base for further investigation.
In his official communication, CM Stalin expressed deep concern over the repeated incidents of arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen. He emphasized that such arrests not only affect the livelihood of coastal communities but also strain India–Sri Lanka bilateral relations.
“I request the Union Government to take swift and decisive diplomatic measures to secure the immediate release of our fishermen and their boats,” CM Stalin said.
He also urged the Ministry of External Affairs to take permanent steps to prevent such incidents in the future through bilateral discussions and maritime cooperation.
Past Incidents and Repeated Appeals
Tamil Nadu has frequently witnessed similar arrests, especially in districts like Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, and Pudukottai, where fishermen often stray across invisible maritime borders. Despite multiple high-level diplomatic talks, the issue persists, leading to rising frustration among fishing communities.
According to officials, over 100 Indian fishermen have been detained by Sri Lanka in the past year, with many boats yet to be released despite repeated representations.
Economic and Social Impact
The ongoing arrests have a severe impact on the fishing economy of Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts. Fishing families depend entirely on daily catches for income, and detentions abroad leave them without financial support.
Chief Minister Stalin reiterated that the Centre must take a proactive role in ensuring both fishermen’s safety and livelihood security, especially during the monsoon fishing ban period when alternate livelihood programs are limited.
