Cyclone Montha Approaches: Coastal Andhra Rains Batter Districts; Senior Citizens & Pregnant Women Moved to Camps

Vizzve Admin

Introduction

The coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh have been placed on high alert as Cyclone Montha advances over the Bay of Bengal. Authorities report heavy rainfall across vulnerable regions, and proactive evacuation efforts are underway — particularly for senior citizens, pregnant women and other high-risk residents.

System Overview & Expected Impact

Cyclone Montha has intensified over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is forecast to make landfall along Andhra’s coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada during the evening or night of October 28, 2025.  Wind speeds near landfall are expected to reach 90–100 km h⁻¹, with gusts up to 110 km h⁻¹ in the worst-case scenario.  Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for multiple coastal and adjacent districts from October 27 to 29.

Evacuation & Relief Preparedness

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has declared red and orange alerts for over 20 districts and mobilised disaster-response teams.

Special Officers and district-level relief controllers have been appointed, and 24×7 cyclone control rooms activated.

Senior citizens, expectant mothers (pregnant women) and residents of low-lying or coastal zones are being transferred to relief camps and safer shelters. In one district, over 6,000 people were shifted across 34 coastal villages and 428 pregnant women in their final weeks moved to health centres.

Schools and colleges in many districts have been closed from October 27 through 31 as a precaution.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have deployed teams and equipment in coastal districts.

Rainfall, Agriculture & Coastal Risks

Persistent rainfall-bands linked to the cyclone are already affecting costal and adjoining interior districts. The heavy rain has led to water-logging, river-swelling and risk to crops, especially paddy fields that are in the harvesting or mature stage.  Coastal communities also face the threats of storm surge, rough seas and wind-damage to infrastructure and fishing assets.

Why This Matters

Human safety: The evacuation of vulnerable populations (senior citizens, pregnant women) signifies the seriousness of the threat and the need for swift action.

Agriculture & economy: Large tracts of paddy and other crops are at stake; a direct hit could cause major economic setback to farmers and the region.

Infrastructure & transport: The combination of wind, rain, floods and storm surge can disrupt roads, power supply, communications and coastal transport.

Preparation & early action: The structured response by disaster-management agencies shows how preparedness can mitigate the worst effects of a cyclone.

FAQ

Q1: What is Cyclone Montha and where is it headed?
A1: Cyclone Montha is a tropical storm developing over the Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam (near Kakinada) during the night of October 28, 2025.

Q2: Which districts in Andhra are most likely to be affected?
A2: Alerts are in place for more than 20 districts with red-level warnings for major coastal areas such as Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari, Kakinada, Konaseema, Eluru, and NTR district among others.

Q3: Why are senior citizens and pregnant women being moved to camps?
A3: The authorities are prioritising vulnerable populations — such as senior citizens (who may have mobility issues) and pregnant women (who may face medical risks during disruptions) — for relocation to safer relief centres to ensure their safety ahead of heavy rains, flooding and potential power or communications outages.

Q4: What should residents in the coastal belt do to stay safe?
A4: Key steps:

Follow official evacuation directives promptly.

Avoid venturing into low-lying areas, beaches, or sea during the storm.

Secure loose items, keep emergency kits ready (lights, power banks, medicines).

Stay updated via local administration broadcasts and disaster-management alerts.

Move to designated shelters or relief camps if advised.

Q5: How will this cyclone impact agriculture and economy?
A5: With large areas of paddy and other crops in their harvest or maturity stage, heavy rains and wind could flatten fields, delay harvests and cause spoilage or fungal attacks. This can lead to financial losses for farmers and impact local economy and supply chains.
