Cyclone Montha Landfall: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha & Bengal Brace Heavy Rainfall — Schools Shut

Vizzve Admin

Introduction

The tropical cyclone named Cyclone Montha has intensified in the southeast Bay of Bengal and is poised to make landfall on the eastern coast of India — especially along the coast of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh — on October 28, 2025.
With wind speeds forecast up to 90-100 km/h and gusts possibly reaching 110 km/h, the storm is triggering heavy rainfall warnings across coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Odisha and West Bengal.
This post summarises what we know so far — track, warnings, impact zones, preparedness measures — and answers frequently asked questions to keep you informed and ready.

What’s the Current Situation?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.

Schools and colleges have been ordered closed in vulnerable districts; for example, in Andhra Pradesh schools are shut from October 27 to 29 in many districts.

The forecast path projects landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada.

Rainfall alerts cover coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Telangana as rain bands spread.

What Areas Are Most At Risk?

Coastal Andhra Pradesh (particularly Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Konaseema) are under the highest danger zone with heavy rainfall and storm surge risk.

Southern Odisha districts — Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur — are under ‘red zone’ alerts for extremely heavy rainfall.

West Bengal (coastal districts including South 24 Parganas, Purba/Paschim Medinipur, Howrah) are also expected to see heavy rain between October 28‐31.

Anticipated Impacts

Gale-force winds reaching up to 110 km/h at landfall, with gusts even higher.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (several hundreds of mm in short span) in the affected zones, raising risk of flooding and landslides in hilly terrain and low-lying areas.

Rough sea conditions, large waves, storm surge along the coast — fishermen and coastal communities are advised to stay safe.

Disruption to schools, colleges, travel, agriculture (especially paddy fields in coastal belts) and power/communication lines due to wind and rain.

Preparedness & Response Measures

Both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha governments have mobilised disaster response teams, positioned relief stock (food, fuel, medicines), activated shelters, and cancelled leaves of government staff in vulnerable districts.

Authorities have evacuated residents from low-lying and coastal vulnerable zones, and issued instructions for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea from October 27-29.

Schools and Anganwadi centres have been shut in many districts to keep children safe.

Public is advised: stay indoors, keep track of weather updates, secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel, move to shelters if directed.

Why Is Cyclone Montha Gaining Attention?

The Bay of Bengal remains a hotspot for cyclone formation, and the shape of the eastern coastline amplifies effects of storm surge, wind and rainfall.
Given the timing (late October) and projected path, Montha’s effect could be significant for agriculture, infrastructure and human safety in the already-vulnerable coastal belt.
