๐ Delhi EV Policy 2.0: Only Two ICE Cars Allowed Per Family Under New Draft Rules
April 25, 2025 โ In a bold move to curb vehicular pollution and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, the Delhi government has proposed a major restriction under its upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 โ limiting each household to owning a maximum of two internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
The draft policy, released for public feedback, also proposes that any additional vehicle purchases beyond this limit must be electric.
๐ฑ A Push Toward Sustainable Transport
The proposed policy aims to dramatically improve Delhiโs air quality, which continues to be among the worst in the world. According to Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, the restriction is intended to reduce the growing number of petrol and diesel vehicles in the city while creating more space for clean, zero-emission alternatives.
โDelhi is moving towards a future where electric vehicles are the default choice. This step is a part of our long-term vision to fight pollution and promote sustainable mobility,โ Gahlot stated.
๐ Key Provisions of EV Policy 2.0
Maximum of 2 ICE vehicles (cars or two-wheelers) per family
Any additional vehicles must be electric
Enhanced EV subsidies for buyers, including increased incentives for e-scooters and e-rickshaws
A significant expansion of public charging infrastructure
Mandatory EV purchase for all government departments and fleets
Scrappage benefits for replacing old ICE vehicles with EVs
๐ Reactions Mixed
The announcement has triggered a mixed reaction from Delhi residents. Environmental groups and clean energy advocates have applauded the move, calling it a โgame-changer for Indian cities.โ However, some citizens have raised concerns about the affordability and practicality of EVs, especially in areas with limited charging stations.
Automobile dealers have also requested clarity on enforcement, exceptions for larger families, and timelines for implementation.
๐๏ธ What This Means for Delhiites
If implemented, Delhi would become the first Indian city to place a cap on ICE vehicle ownership, setting a precedent for other metro areas facing pollution crises.
The policy is still in the public consultation stage, with the final version expected to be notified later this year.
