On Monday, the last day to file nominations for the election to the mayor and deputy mayor’s posts in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced that it would not be fielding any candidates. However, the decision was far from last minute, with AAP leaders claiming the party was playing the long game instead of getting into a battle that would have been bruising and gone down to the wire.
Elections to the two posts, with a term of one year each, are to be held on April 25. In the MCD elections held in December 2022, the AAP had secured 134 out of the 250 seats, while the BJP had won 104 and the Congress 9. The remaining seats had gone to Independents. However, as the anti-defection law does not apply to the MCD, the continuous poaching of councillors from both ends has left the numbers altered: the AAP now holds 113 seats, the BJP 117, and the Congress 8.
Announcing the decision to not field candidates for the mayor and deputy mayor posts, at a press conference, Leader of the Opposition Atishi said: “Despite suffering a crushing defeat in the MCD elections, the BJP did not stop. It poached AAP councillors and attempted to win through backdoor means… If we wanted to win the mayor’s election, we too would have to indulge in horse-trading. But we reject such dirty politics.”
