Delhi's Old Vehicle Fuel Ban Begins Today: Here’s How It’s Being Enforced

Vizzve Admin

As part of its aggressive push to combat air pollution, the Delhi government has officially implemented the ban on old petrol and diesel vehicles from July 1, 2025. Under the new directive:

Petrol vehicles older than 15 years

Diesel vehicles older than 10 years

are not allowed to operate on public roads in the national capital.

How the Ban Is Being Enforced

To ensure full compliance, Delhi authorities have rolled out a multi-layered enforcement strategy:

Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras track vehicle age and emission class

Traffic police checkpoints have been increased across high-traffic zones and borders

Delhi Transport Department is conducting targeted raids and on-spot challans

Vehicles caught violating the rule may be impounded and deregistered immediately

 Penalties for Violators

Fine: Up to ₹10,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act

Seizure: Vehicles found in violation may be towed and scrapped

Blacklist: Repeat offenders will face permanent deregistration and legal action

Alternatives for Affected Vehicle Owners

Scrapping Incentive: Vehicle owners can apply for incentives under Delhi's Vehicle Scrapping Policy

EV Transition: Special subsidies are offered to shift towards electric vehicles (EVs)

Re-registration Outside NCR: Some opt to transfer vehicle ownership to other states

 Why This Ban Matters

Delhi has long struggled with toxic air levels, especially during winter. The ban is expected to:

Reduce PM2.5 and PM10 emissions by over 15%

Encourage adoption of greener mobility solutions

Support India's net-zero carbon goals by 2070
