As the Ganga river crosses danger levels in several areas of Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Varanasi on Sunday to assess the flood situation, meet with local officials, and assure support for ongoing relief operations. His visit comes amid a red alert issued by the Central Water Commission for Varanasi and surrounding districts.
What’s Happening in Varanasi?
Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the Himalayan region and excess water discharge from upstream barrages, the Ganga has been overflowing, affecting low-lying areas, ghats, and nearby habitations.
Areas affected in Varanasi:
Assi Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat partially submerged
Many colonies along the banks evacuated
Electricity and water services disrupted in flood-hit zones
PM Modi’s On-Ground Review
Prime Minister Modi visited flood relief camps, interacted with affected families, and assured them that central assistance would be provided for rapid recovery.
He chaired a high-level meeting with:
District officials
NDRF and SDRF teams
Health and sanitation departments
Disaster management authorities
PM Modi also directed officials to set up more temporary shelters, ensure safe drinking water, and strengthen medical support in relief zones.
Rescue and Relief Measures in Motion
Active Measures Taken:
Over 3,000 people evacuated from flood-prone zones
Mobile health units and food packets deployed
SDRF boats running emergency transport services
24x7 helpline numbers made active for citizens
The Prime Minister praised local volunteers and civil society groups for their role in helping rescue families and deliver food/water.
Why This Flood Alert Matters
Flooding of the Ganga isn't new — but the frequency and intensity of such events are increasing. Experts believe climate change and erratic monsoons are leading to sudden water surges, which threaten lives and infrastructure in densely populated regions like Varanasi.
