Government: Ethanol‑Blended Petrol Safe for Cars — Engine Damage Concerns ‘Largely Unfounded’

Vizzve Admin

In response to public concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has officially stated that E20 fuel (20% ethanol-blended petrol) is safe for vehicles, including older models.

The government called recent allegations about engine damage and performance loss “largely unfounded.”

📊 Key Insights from Government Testing

Over 100,000 km of testing was conducted on different vehicle types.

No significant changes in power, torque, or durability were observed.

E20 petrol is suitable for both modern and legacy vehicles.

Both cold and hot starts were successful.

No abnormal engine wear reported.

⚙️ What About Fuel Efficiency?

Slight drop of 1–2% in fuel efficiency in E20-ready vehicles.

Older vehicles may see a drop of 3–6%, but not drastic.

The reduction is manageable with proper engine tuning.

Vehicles built post-2023 are mostly E20-compliant.

🧪 Corrosion & Component Wear: Addressed

E20 petrol includes corrosion inhibitors.

Material compatibility is ensured through updated fuel system standards.

Minor part replacements (like rubber seals) may be needed after extended use — routine and inexpensive.

🌱 Environment & Economic Impact

CO₂ emissions cut by up to 65% with sugarcane ethanol, and 50% with maize ethanol.

Since 2014–15, over ₹1.4 lakh crore saved in foreign exchange.

₹1.2 lakh crore paid to farmers, boosting rural income.

E20 supports India's biofuel and climate goals.

Summary Table

ConcernGovt Response
Engine damageNo significant issues detected
Power lossNone observed in controlled tests
Fuel efficiency dropMarginal; can be optimized
Corrosion riskManaged with inhibitors and material upgrades
Cost to vehicle ownersMinimal, mostly routine maintenance
Environmental benefitSubstantial emission reductions

FAQs

Q1: Is E20 petrol safe for older vehicles?
Yes. It passed durability tests and showed no abnormal wear in older engines.

Q2: Will my car’s mileage drop with E20?
Only slightly. Around 1–2% in new vehicles, and 3–6% in older ones — not a major concern.

Q3: Does E20 cause engine corrosion?
No. Corrosion inhibitors are added, and modern materials resist ethanol-induced wear.

Q4: Can I switch to E20 fuel today?
Yes, especially if your vehicle was made after 2023. Older cars can run on E20 too with minor maintenance.

Q5: Why is the government pushing E20 now?
To reduce carbon emissions, cut oil imports, and support Indian farmers via ethanol production.
