How a bank officer saved a woman from falling prey to ‘digital arrest’ fraud

Vizzve Admin

In a remarkable display of alertness and civic duty, a vigilant bank officer recently prevented a woman from becoming a victim of the increasingly prevalent “digital arrest” fraud—a cybercrime tactic that has been duping unsuspecting citizens across the country.

What Happened?
The incident occurred at a busy branch of a nationalized bank when a visibly distressed woman in her early 40s approached the counter. She appeared agitated and insisted on making a large fund transfer immediately. Her hurried demeanor and nervousness caught the attention of the bank officer on duty, who decided to engage in conversation to understand the urgency.

During the conversation, the woman revealed that she had received a video call from someone claiming to be a senior law enforcement officer. The caller accused her of being involved in illegal activities, including money laundering, and threatened her with immediate arrest. She was told her bank account would be frozen unless she followed their instructions, which included transferring her money to a so-called "safe government account."

Bank Officer Steps In
Recognizing the signs of a “digital arrest” scam—a tactic where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement to scare victims into transferring money—the bank officer calmly asked the woman to pause the transaction. He discreetly alerted his branch manager and simultaneously contacted the local cybercrime cell.

With the cooperation of the bank staff and quick intervention by the cybercrime unit, the fraud was thwarted in time. The woman’s funds were secured, and she was counseled on how these scams operate.

Understanding ‘Digital Arrest’ Fraud
This form of cybercrime has been on the rise, where fraudsters use fear and impersonation to manipulate victims into giving up sensitive information or transferring money. Often using deepfake videos or spoofed calls, they pretend to be from police departments, the RBI, or investigative agencies.

Authorities Speak Out
Local police and cybercrime experts praised the bank officer's awareness and quick action. “This is a textbook example of how alertness and proper training can prevent cybercrime. We urge all financial institutions to train their frontline staff in identifying such scams,” said a spokesperson from the cybercrime unit.

Public Advisory
Authorities are urging the public not to panic in case of such calls or messages. Law enforcement agencies do not ask for money transfers over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call:

Do not share personal or banking details.

Do not make any fund transfers.

Contact your local police or cybercrime helpline immediately.

Inform your bank.
