On January 4, 2025, Nilay Kailashbhai Patel, a 29-year-old student from Surat, Gujarat, was found deceased on the campus of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B). Earlier that day, he had celebrated his birthday with friends. The incident occurred when he fell from the second floor of his hostel building.
Security personnel discovered Patel lying in the hostel's courtyard lawn around 6:30 am on Sunday. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Initial findings suggest that the fall was accidental, and suicide is considered unlikely. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
IIM-B expressed deep sorrow over Patel's passing, describing him as a "bright student" and a "much-loved friend to many." The institute extended condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
Patel was a second-year management student at IIM-B, enrolled in the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) 2023-25.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death.
