As Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) gears up for its much-anticipated student union elections in 2025, the political climate on campus is witnessing a significant shift. The historically dominant Left bloc, which has long shaped the narrative of JNU politics, now finds itself fragmented, raising questions about whether the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) can turn this division into electoral gain.
Left Unity Under Strain
For years, a united Left—comprising outfits like the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF), and others—has held sway over the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU). However, this year, ideological rifts and internal differences over candidate selection, campaign priorities, and response strategies to national politics have weakened their alliance.
Sources suggest that multiple Left organizations may field their own candidates this time, with talks of a joint front faltering amid mutual distrust. With the Left’s vote base likely to split, its decades-long grip on the union faces an unprecedented challenge.
ABVP Eyes a Rare Opportunity
The ABVP, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has gradually expanded its presence on the JNU campus, traditionally known for its progressive and left-leaning politics. While it has occasionally won individual seats or fared well in specific schools, the overall control of the JNUSU has remained elusive.
This election, however, might be different. ABVP leaders have launched an aggressive campaign focusing on nationalism, academic reforms, and campus discipline—narratives that sharply contrast with the Left’s focus on resistance, rights, and protest politics.
Capitalising on the Left's internal fissures, the ABVP is positioning itself as the only “unified and stable” force capable of leading the student body effectively.
Students Caught in the Crossfire
Amid this political tug-of-war, the student body remains divided. Many students express frustration with both camps—one for infighting, the other for polarising rhetoric. Issues such as hostel shortages, fee hikes, lack of mental health support, and declining academic resources are expected to dominate the debates, but may get overshadowed by ideological clashes.
Independent candidates and smaller groups like the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) may also influence the outcome, especially if voter turnout among marginalized communities rises.
The Road Ahead
As campaigning heats up, all eyes are on whether ABVP can indeed ride the wave of Left disunity to secure a rare victory at JNU, or if the Left can regroup in time to retain control. Either way, the 2025 JNUSU elections promise to be a turning point in campus politics—both symbolically and strategically.
