The indefinite strike announced by KSRTC and BMTC employees from August 5, 2025, has been temporarily paused following a Karnataka High Court order. The strike, called over salary arrears and wage hikes, had threatened to cripple public transport across Bengaluru and other Karnataka cities.
Why Was the Strike Called?
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and NEKRTC demanded:
25% wage hike effective from January 1, 2024
Payment of 38 months’ arrears
Implementation of pending 6th Pay Commission recommendations
Negotiations with the government failed on August 4, triggering plans for a complete shutdown from the next day.
What Changed?
On August 4, the Karnataka High Court issued a stay on the strike for one day and urged the unions to return to the negotiation table.
Despite the stay, some KSRTC units began the strike early on August 5, causing major disruption in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Hubballi.
By the evening, many bus services resumed operations, and the strike was put on hold temporarily.
Current Status of Bus Services
| Region | KSRTC Status | BMTC Status |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | Partial, improving | Mostly operational |
| Mysuru | Limited services | Not applicable |
| Hubballi | Services disrupted | Not applicable |
| Rural Karnataka | Mixed response | Not applicable |
The Karnataka government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to prevent disruption until December 31, 2025.
What Commuters Should Know
Metro services are running as usual, but remain overcrowded due to the strike.
App-based cabs, autos, and private buses have surged fares in response to increased demand.
Work from home (WFH) advisories have been issued to IT companies and essential businesses.
What’s Next?
Talks are expected to resume this week between the government and union leaders.
If no resolution is reached, unions may relaunch the strike, despite legal hurdles.
The public transport system remains fragile, with commuters urged to plan alternative options.
