LIC & Department of Rural Development Sign MoU to Promote Bima Sakhi Yojana

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Rural Development, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, to promote the flagship Bima Sakhi Yojana across rural areas. This partnership was announced during the National Conclave on Financial Inclusion, ‘Anubhuti’, held from July 8 to 10, 2025, in Goa.

What is the Bima Sakhi Yojana?

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is a women-centric initiative by LIC, uniquely designed to empower rural women by integrating them into the insurance distribution network. It offers a performance-based stipendiary agency career exclusively for women, giving all benefits and privileges identical to those of regular LIC agents. This scheme aims to cultivate long-term financial independence for women while simultaneously strengthening the insurance sector.

Benefits and Stipend Structure under Bima Sakhi Yojana

Under this scheme, participating women, called Bima Sakhi agents, receive a monthly stipend for the initial three years to support and stabilize their careers:

₹7,000 per month in the first year

₹6,000 per month in the second year

₹5,000 per month in the third year

This stipend is provided subject to meeting specific terms and conditions, ensuring that women agents get financial backing during the critical early stage of their insurance career.

Strategic Alignment with DAY-NRLM

The MoU aligns Bima Sakhi Yojana objectives with the broader goals of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). Both initiatives focus on enhancing livelihoods and income-generating opportunities for rural households. Leveraging this alignment maximizes the positive social impact by promoting financial inclusion and creating sustainable income sources for rural women.

Empowering Rural Women and India’s Insurance Industry

This collaboration promises to empower rural women with a stable, dignified career, enabling them to earn an income, become financially self-reliant, and play an active role in India’s growing insurance market. The program also contributes to improving rural household income and supports the government's vision of inclusive growth.
