A major accident in Madhya Pradesh left over 320 people injured when ‘carbide guns’, locally used for fireworks and sound effects during Diwali festivities, exploded uncontrollably in multiple areas.

The incident, which occurred in Sehore and nearby districts, has raised serious questions about public safety regulations and unregulated festive practices.

What Are ‘Carbide Guns’?

‘Carbide guns’ are makeshift noise-making devices created using calcium carbide and water, which produce loud explosive sounds when ignited.
Though popular during festivals in rural and semi-urban regions, these devices are highly dangerous and illegal under India’s Explosives Act.

The Incident and Response

Officials reported that the explosions occurred almost simultaneously in several villages during community celebrations. The blast injuries ranged from minor burns and fractures to severe eye and ear damage.

Emergency teams were rushed to the affected sites, and dozens of victims were admitted to district hospitals for treatment.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan personally visited the victims and assured that medical costs would be covered by the government. He also directed officials to identify and curb illegal sale of calcium carbide and homemade explosive devices.

“Such dangerous practices must stop immediately. The safety of citizens is non-negotiable,” said CM Chouhan during his hospital visit.

Government Measures

The state government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the source and distribution of carbide materials used in the devices.
Local police have detained several individuals involved in manufacturing and selling the guns.

Additionally, awareness campaigns are expected to be launched before future festivals to promote safe celebrations and discourage illegal pyrotechnics.

Public Reaction

Social media platforms have been flooded with images and videos of the injured, prompting widespread outrage and demands for stricter enforcement.
Health experts have also warned that carbide gas exposure can cause respiratory issues and chemical burns, adding to the urgency of regulation.
