Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde resigns amid row over sarpanch murder

Maharashtra's Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Dhananjay Munde, has resigned following allegations linking his close aide, Walmik Karad, to the brutal murder of Beed district sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh.

Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted and murdered on December 9, 2024. Investigations revealed that Deshmukh was targeted for opposing extortion attempts tied to an energy company operating in the district.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed a chargesheet detailing the brutality of the murder, including videos and photos taken by the assailants during the crime. The chargesheet implicated Walmik Karad, a close associate of Munde, as the primary accused.

In response to the mounting pressure and the severity of the allegations, Dhananjay Munde submitted his resignation on March 4, 2025. He cited health concerns as a reason for his resignation but also emphasized his demand for the harshest punishment for those involved in Deshmukh's murder.
