MAJOR ACCIDENT AT MAHARASHTRA'S MAHALAXMI JAGDAMBA TEMPLE: 16 INJURED

Incident Overview

On the evening of August 9, 2025, a major accident occurred at the Shri Mahalaxmi Jagdamba Temple located in Koradi, Nagpur district, Maharashtra. A slab from the under-construction entrance gate, part of a redeveloping beautification project, suddenly collapsed, injuring 16 workers present at the site.

The collapse happened around 8 PM while construction was underway on the temple’s grand entrance gate. Official reports indicate that the failure was triggered by structural issues involving scaffolding, with preliminary findings suggesting that the cuplock of one of the pipes in the scaffolding broke, causing the slab to fall.

Injuries and Rescue Efforts

Among the 16 injured, three workers were reported to be in critical condition.

Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and fire brigade, launched immediate rescue and relief operations.

Injured individuals were promptly admitted to nearby hospitals, including Nandini and Max Hospitals, where they are receiving medical care.

No fatalities have been reported as of now, and ongoing monitoring continues for the critical cases.

Operational and Structural Details

The collapsed section was part of the Rs 214.94 crore Phase 3 and Phase 4 redevelopment project of the Mahalaxmi Jagdamba Mandir, implemented by the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA).

The project includes multiple structures such as a Ramayana Museum and a 151-foot Lord Hanuman statue, aiming to transform the temple complex significantly.

Debris clearance is in progress using heavy machinery to fully assess structural impacts and prevent further risk.

Official Statements and Next Steps

NMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Meena and other officials have arrived at the accident site to oversee the rescue work.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the collapse to determine possible safety lapses or construction irregularities.

Rescue officials have confirmed there is no one trapped under the debris currently, but debris removal continues carefully.

The incident caused panic among workers and onlookers around the temple vicinity.

Local authorities have assured public safety measures and intensified monitoring at construction zones around the temple.
