Key UPI Rule Changes You Need to Know
1. Daily Balance Check Limit
UPI apps will now allow a maximum of 50 balance enquiries per day per user per app. This aims to reduce unnecessary load on bank servers.
2. Account Link Status Limit
Users can check the list of linked bank accounts only 25 times per day per app. This check must be user-initiated and not system-generated.
3. Autopay Mandates Time Restriction
Recurring payments such as EMIs, subscriptions, and utility bills will now be processed only during non-peak hours. These are scheduled outside 10 AM–1 PM and 5 PM–9:30 PM.
4. Transaction Status Check Limit
You must wait 90 seconds after initiating a UPI payment before checking its status. A maximum of 3 status checks are allowed within a 2-hour window for each transaction.
5. Control Over API Calls
During peak hours, UPI apps will throttle or pause automated (non-user initiated) requests like balance and account checks to reduce congestion.
Why These Changes Matter
These updates are aimed at ensuring a smoother, more reliable UPI experience, especially during peak usage times. The goal is to avoid downtime and improve real-time transaction processing across platforms.
Impact on UPI Users
Frequent users may need to adjust habits, especially regarding balance checks.
Autopay users should expect payments to be scheduled at off-peak times.
Improved app performance is expected, with fewer delays and failed transactions.
Reduced app/server downtime during busy hours.
