Mamata Banerjee Vows to Nullify BJP’s Waqf Bill if Opposition Forms Government
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that it is aimed at creating divisions in the country. She has vowed to repeal the legislation if the opposition comes to power in the upcoming general elections.
Addressing a public rally, Banerjee accused the BJP of using the bill as a political tool to target minorities and disrupt social harmony. "This bill is an attempt to divide the nation and create unrest. When a new government is formed after removing the BJP from power, we will bring an amendment to nullify it," she declared.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, recently passed in the Lok Sabha, has sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties and minority organizations. While the ruling BJP maintains that the bill is meant to bring transparency and reform to Waqf properties, critics argue that it threatens the rights of Muslim communities and could lead to government control over religious endowments.
Several opposition leaders, including members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and other regional parties, have joined Banerjee in denouncing the bill. Legal experts and Muslim organizations have also raised concerns, with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) warning of a possible legal challenge if the bill gets passed in the Rajya Sabha.
As political tensions rise over the issue, Banerjee reaffirmed her party’s commitment to protecting minority rights. "This is not just about Waqf properties, but about safeguarding the constitutional rights of all communities in India. We will not allow such divisive policies to continue," she asserted.
The bill is expected to face a heated debate in the Rajya Sabha, where the opposition hopes to block its passage. With elections approaching, the controversy surrounding the Waqf Bill is likely to become a key issue in national politics.
