Metro 5 Extension to Connect Ulhasnagar; Feasibility Study for Chikloli in Progress

Mumbai’s public transport network is poised for another major upgrade. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated a feasibility study to explore the extension of Metro Line 5—currently under construction between Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan—towards Ulhasnagar and Chikloli.

This potential expansion could transform regional connectivity for commuters in Thane district, providing seamless metro access to residents of Ulhasnagar and its neighboring zones.

Why This Extension Matters

Ulhasnagar, home to over 7 lakh residents, currently lacks direct metro access. The proposed extension would:

Alleviate road congestion in and around Kalyan-Ulhasnagar

Enable faster travel to Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai

Support affordable, efficient urban mobility

Encourage real estate and economic development

The Chikloli stretch, a fast-growing residential area, is also being considered for inclusion in the route, giving further boost to last-mile metro connectivity.

Extension Route and Study Scope

While Metro 5 currently ends at Kalyan APMC, the proposed extension may cover the following key areas:

Kalyan APMC

Ulhasnagar

Chikloli

The feasibility study will assess:

Route alignment and station location options

Construction cost and technical viability

Projected ridership and economic impact

Land acquisition and resettlement needs

Environmental concerns

Based on the study outcome, the MMRDA will proceed with the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Metro 5: Existing Status at a Glance

Current Route: Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan

Length: 24.9 km

Type: Elevated corridor

Status: Under construction

Planned Stations: 17

Funding: Assisted by Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)

The extension would be an add-on to this main corridor and align with the MMRDA’s plan for integrated metro connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Benefits of the Metro 5 Extension

Enhanced Connectivity: Linking interior areas to the metro backbone

Time Savings: Reduced travel duration between Ulhasnagar and Thane

Reduced Road Pressure: Decreased vehicular load on highways

Affordable Mobility: Safe, quick, and economical public transit

Regional Growth: Boost to real estate, employment, and commerce
