METRO RAIL TO COMPLETE VIADUCT AND DOUBLE DECKER CONSTRUCTION BETWEEN PORUR AND POWER HOUSE BY SEPTEMBER END
Project Status and Importance
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is on track to finish the viaduct and double-decker metro stretch along Arcot Road between Porur and Power House by the end of September 2025. This section is part of the expansive 26.1 km Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee) of Phase II.
Nearly 95% of the 340 structural piers required for this stretch are completed.
The double-decker viaduct spans approximately 3.75 km between Alwarthirunagar and Alapakkam, facilitating two levels of metro tracks — boosting capacity and connectivity.
This stretch will connect seamlessly with the existing Phase I network at Vadapalani, enhancing commuter options across Chennai.
Technical Challenges and Progress
Construction faced delays of about six months due to logistical challenges, such as building viaducts on congested roads requiring specialized equipment and relocating underground pipelines and cables.
While most of the viaduct is complete, work near Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, and Vadapalani is expected to be wrapped up soon.
Track laying and overhead equipment installation are ongoing at key locations including Vadapalani, Saligramam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam.
Operational Outlook
By mid-2026, the first level of the double-decker section is expected to become operational, with the second level opening once connected Corridor 5 stretches are ready.
The infrastructure enables smooth transfers between multiple corridors at hubs like Alwarthirunagar and Valasaravakkam, creating a seamless metro experience.
The elevated double-decker design optimizes limited urban space while increasing system capacity.
