The investigation into the Red Fort car explosion in Delhi has been officially handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), as authorities deepen the probe into what is being described as a “high-intensity blast” that killed nine people and injured over 20 others on Monday evening.
The explosion, which occurred near the Lal Qila Metro Station, sent shockwaves across the capital and prompted a citywide security alert.
NIA Takes Over Case From Delhi Police
The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday transferred the case to the NIA, citing possible links to organized networks or terror elements.
“Given the nature and location of the blast, the investigation requires specialized forensic and intelligence coordination,” a senior MHA official said.
The NIA has deployed multiple teams, including explosive experts, digital analysts, and intelligence coordinators, to examine the forensic evidence collected by the Delhi Police Special Cell.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from around Red Fort and vehicle registration data linked to the Hyundai i20 that reportedly exploded near the metro station.
Forensic Analysis Underway
Preliminary forensic assessment suggests that the explosion may have involved improvised explosive material, though officials have not ruled out mechanical malfunction.
Samples from the vehicle and nearby debris have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).
“We are exploring all angles — terror, sabotage, or technical failure,” said a Delhi Police spokesperson.
“The NIA will now take the lead with full access to local intelligence inputs.”
Authorities are also examining call records and online transactions associated with the car’s ownership to identify possible accomplices.
Capital on High Alert
Security across Delhi NCR has been intensified, with sniffer dogs, anti-sabotage teams, and metal detectors deployed at major transport hubs and tourist sites.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) continues to keep the Lal Qila Metro Station closed as a precaution.
Commuters are being redirected to nearby stations including Jama Masjid and Kashmere Gate.
“We urge citizens to avoid crowded areas and report suspicious activity to the nearest police personnel,” said Joint CP (Central) Dinesh Kumar.
Political and Public Reactions
Home Minister Amit Shah has been briefed by top officials and stated that the NIA’s involvement underscores the government’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism.
“Those responsible for this act will not be spared,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Opposition leaders called for transparency and better coordination among intelligence agencies, while several Delhi residents held candlelight vigils near the Red Fort area late last night.
