As torrential rains continue to lash parts of northern India, Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is bracing for more intense downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the region, prompting the state administration to shut down schools on August 5th, 2025, as a precautionary measure.
What Is the Orange Alert?
An Orange Alert indicates “be prepared” conditions. It suggests the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific areas, which could lead to:
Waterlogging
Flash floods
Landslides in hilly areas
Disruption in traffic and essential services
In the case of Dehradun, IMD forecasts show rainfall exceeding 115 mm in a single day — enough to disrupt normal life.
Schools Ordered Shut for Safety
The District Magistrate of Dehradun, Sonika, announced the closure of all government and private schools, including anganwadis, to ensure the safety of students and staff.
While online classes are optional, most schools have declared it a rain day, giving students and staff a much-needed break during hazardous conditions.
Current Weather Conditions
As of the latest reports:
Intermittent rainfall continues across Dehradun city and its outskirts
Rivers like Rispana and Bindal are showing elevated levels
Hilly regions around Mussoorie and Dhanaulti have experienced minor landslides and road blockages
Advisory Issued for Citizens
The state disaster management department has also issued a public advisory, urging people to:
Avoid unnecessary travel
Stay away from rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones
Keep emergency supplies and backup electricity ready
Stay tuned to official weather alerts via TV, radio, and apps
Previous Rain-Related Incidents
Just last month, flash floods in nearby areas had washed away vehicles, damaged roads, and led to temporary closure of highways like NH-7 and NH-307.
With monsoon reaching its peak, officials are especially cautious about repeat disasters, particularly in the hilly and ecologically sensitive Garhwal region.
What Lies Ahead?
The IMD forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall for the next 2–3 days in Dehradun and adjoining districts like Tehri Garhwal, Pauri, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli. The Orange Alert could be extended or upgraded if rainfall intensifies.
Meanwhile, rescue teams, NDRF personnel, and municipal bodies have been put on high alert for flood response and emergency evacuation if needed.
Final Thoughts
While the rains are a natural part of life in the Himalayas, extreme weather events like these remind us of the urgent need for better urban drainage systems, landslide prevention strategies, and climate-resilient infrastructure. School closures may be a temporary solution — but the long-term challenge lies in managing monsoons safely in a changing climate.
