The usually calm corridors of Anantnag’s main hospital turned into a scene of urgency and sorrow as ambulances kept arriving, ferrying victims of the devastating Pahalgam attack. Over three long nights, the hospital bore witness to pain, fear, and unimaginable resilience.
The first night was the most chaotic. Around midnight, the first batch of the injured — many of them pilgrims and security personnel — was rushed in. Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, some of whom had returned home after their shifts, were urgently called back. Makeshift operation theatres were set up, and blood donation drives began almost immediately, as supplies quickly dwindled.
Survivors, many barely conscious, had wounds that told the story of the ambush — gunshot injuries, shrapnel wounds, and trauma from overturned vehicles. Families crowded outside the emergency wards, desperate for news, some breaking down as medical staff struggled to save lives inside.
The second night was equally harrowing. Relatives who had managed to reach the hospital from different parts of Kashmir and beyond faced the crushing reality of identifying loved ones. Some injured pilgrims, too unstable to be moved further, were kept in intensive care units, while doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize others for transfer to Srinagar’s specialty hospitals.
Local volunteers arrived in droves, bringing food, blankets, and emotional support. “We have seen tragedy before, but this... this was different," said Zubair Ahmad, a local volunteer who spent all three nights at the hospital.
The third night saw a glimmer of hope. Several injured patients showed signs of improvement, though the emotional wounds would take much longer to heal. Survivors shared harrowing tales — of sudden gunfire, chaos, prayers whispered in the dark, and the courage of strangers who helped each other survive.
Security around the hospital was tightened, with personnel standing guard outside wards and corridors. Despite the heavy atmosphere, the spirit inside was one of resilience. Doctors who hadn't slept in three days continued their rounds, volunteers stayed to help, and the injured fought on.
Anantnag hospital became not just a place of treatment, but a shelter where trauma was met with compassion, and despair with solidarity. For three long nights, it stood as a symbol of Kashmir’s pain — and its incredible strength.
