Introduction

On April 22, 2025, an armed group struck at the Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam—a popular pilgrimage and tourist site in Jammu and Kashmir—opening fire on a convoy of civilians. Twenty-six people, including predominantly Hindu pilgrims and a Nepali national, were killed in one of the deadliest attacks in the region in nearly two decades

Attack Details

Eyewitnesses report that assailants, traveling in two SUVs, blocked the road and unleashed automatic rifle fire on the tourists. The surprise nature of the assault and the remote, forested terrain contributed to the high casualty count before security forces could respond

Aftermath & Security Response

Within hours, Indian security forces launched a massive manhunt across Anantnag district, combing homes and forested hillsides for the perpetrators. Authorities have named three suspects—two of whom are believed to be Pakistani nationals—and announced rewards for information leading to their capture. In some cases, suspected militant hideouts have been demolished to deter further attacks.

Diplomatic Fallout

India has accused Pakistan of backing the attackers through “cross-border linkages,” allegations Islamabad denies. In retaliation, New Delhi suspended its commitments under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian carriers and downgraded diplomatic ties. Islamabad’s Defence Minister has called for an international investigation into the incident, offering cooperation—but warning against punitive measures without irrefutable proof

.

International Reaction

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, appealed for restraint and expressed confidence that India and Pakistan would resolve their differences independently, while acknowledging the deep-rooted tensions over Kashmir .

Latest Updates

  • Compensation: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh for each family of those killed, ₹2 lakh for serious injuries, and ₹1 lakh for minor wounds, plus arrangements for dignified repatriation of bodies .

  • Militant Identification: Police have officially released names and photos of the three main suspects, offering monetary rewards for tips leading to arrests, and have alerted border posts to prevent escape .

Conclusion

The Pahalgam attack not only represents a tragic loss of civilian life but has once again demonstrated how swiftly violence in Kashmir can escalate into a broader diplomatic crisis. As security operations continue and investigations unfold, the coming days will be critical in determining whether India–Pakistan relations can be steered back from the brink of confrontation.
