PM MODI INAUGURATES KARTAVYA BHAVAN

Overview

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan on August 6, 2025, at Kartavya Path in Delhi. This high-tech office complex is the first of ten upcoming buildings planned under the Central Vista redevelopment project aimed at streamlining government administration and modernizing infrastructure.

Significance of Kartavya Bhavan

Kartavya Bhavan represents a major leap towards efficient, citizen-centric governance by bringing several key ministries and departments under one roof. The building houses the Ministries and Departments of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Petroleum & Natural Gas, and the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA).

Modern Features and Facilities

State-of-the-art Infrastructure: The office complex spans approximately 1.5 lakh square meters over two basements and seven floors. It offers IT-ready secure workspaces with integrated electronic surveillance, ID card-based access controls, and a centralized command system.

Sustainability Focus: The building targets a GRIHA 4-star green building rating. It incorporates double-glazed façades for energy efficiency, rooftop solar panels, solar water heating, advanced HVAC systems, rainwater harvesting, and zero-discharge waste management with in-house solid waste processing.

Eco-Conscious Mobility: Includes electric vehicle charging stations and promotes extensive use of recycled construction materials.

Impact on Government Functioning

By co-locating ministries scattered across Delhi — many currently housed in aging, inefficient buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, and Udyog Bhawan — Kartavya Bhavan improves coordination between departments, accelerates policy execution, reduces maintenance costs, and enhances employee well-being and productivity.

Future Developments

Nine more buildings under the Common Central Secretariat project are planned for completion within the next two years, with some scheduled to open by late 2025 and others by 2026.

Ministries will gradually shift operations to these new premises, allowing heritage buildings like North and South Blocks to be converted into museums.

The Central Vista redevelopment also includes new Parliament, Vice President’s Enclave, and Kartavya Path redevelopment enhancing urban aesthetics and public accessibility.
