Punjab Flood Update: Beas & Sutlej Water Levels Drop Amid Ongoing Rain

Vizzve Admin

Despite continuous rainfall, water levels in Punjab's Beas and Sutlej rivers have shown a slight decline, offering a glimmer of hope in the state's ongoing flood crisis. However, the situation remains critical, with several areas still submerged and authorities on high alert.

Current Water Levels

Pong Dam (Beas River): Water level decreased to 1,392.20 feet, just 2 feet above its upper limit of 1,390 feet. Inflow reduced to 36,968 cusecs, while outflow remained at 90,000 cusecs.

Bhakra Dam (Sutlej River): Water level at 1,677.98 feet, with inflow at 66,891 cusecs and outflow at 70,000 cusecs.

These reductions indicate a temporary stabilization, but the risk of further flooding persists.

Ongoing Flooding and Impact

Many regions in Punjab remain inundated, affecting over 1,400 villages and more than 3.5 lakh residents.

Approximately 3 lakh acres of crops have been damaged.

Villages like Garhi Fazal, Sasrali Colony, and Bholewal Jadid in Ludhiana district have experienced significant erosion and embankment damage.

Authorities are reinforcing embankments to prevent further breaches.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

Structural inspections of damaged buildings are underway.

Farmers are allowed to extract sand deposited in fields to facilitate Rabi crop sowing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.

 FAQs

Residents can donate to government and NGO relief funds, volunteer with local organizations, and assist in community cleanup and rebuilding efforts.
