The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has called upon the Punjab government to create a rehabilitation fund to support young individuals deported from the United States. NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal emphasized that the lack of resources for these returnees could result in severe social and economic consequences for the state.
The plea comes as reports indicate that a US military plane carrying 205 illegal immigrants from Punjab and neighbouring states is expected to land at Amritsar airport on Wednesday afternoon. Many of these individuals left India in search of a better future but faced deportation due to immigration challenges, returning home with financial distress and psychological trauma.
Chahal warned that failure to address this growing crisis could lead to increased unemployment, mental health struggles, and even involvement in illegal activities. He urged the state government to allocate funds for skill development programs, employment opportunities, and mental health counselling to facilitate the reintegration of these individuals into society. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure their proper rehabilitation and reintegration into society,” Chahal said.
NAPA also called for greater collaboration between policymakers and organisations like NAPA to develop comprehensive strategies for tackling the issue. “This is not just an individual problem but a societal one,” Chahal stated. “If we fail to act now, the consequences will be dire for Punjab’s social fabric and economy.”
