Rath Yatra Scare in Ahmedabad: Elephant Runs Amok Near Khadia, Later Tranquilised and Isolated
A brief moment of panic unfolded during the Rath Yatra procession in Ahmedabad on Thursday when one of the elephants broke formation and ran amok near Khadia. The incident occurred during the early hours of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of Gujarat’s most important religious events.
Elephant Tranquilised and Isolated
The elephant reportedly became agitated amid the large crowds and noise, leading to a chaotic scene in the narrow lanes of Khadia. Authorities from the Forest Department and Animal Rescue Team immediately intervened. The elephant was safely tranquilised and isolated from the rest of the herd, preventing any injuries or further disruption.
Veterinary teams remained on site to monitor the animal’s health post-tranquilisation.
Rath Yatra Continues Smoothly With 17 Other Elephants
Despite the scare, the rest of the 17 elephants, along with decorated chariots and religious processions, continued the Rath Yatra on schedule. Thousands of devotees, under tight police security and crowd control measures, resumed their celebrations along the traditional route.
Officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation confirmed that no injuries or property damage were reported in the incident.
Officials’ Response and Crowd Management
Security was immediately stepped up in and around the Khadia area, with Rapid Action Force (RAF) and local police managing crowds to prevent stampedes or panic. Senior civic officials praised the quick coordination between wildlife officials and the police.
“The situation was brought under control within minutes. The elephant has been isolated and is receiving medical attention. The rest of the Rath Yatra procession remains unaffected,” said a senior AMC official.
