Russia says ‘Ukrainian special services agent’ detained in connection with car blast that killed a Russian general

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced the detention of a suspected Ukrainian special services agent allegedly linked to a car explosion that killed a high-ranking Russian general earlier this week.

The general, whose identity has not yet been officially disclosed by Russian authorities, died when his vehicle exploded in the southern Russian region of Rostov near the border with Ukraine. Russian officials say the attack was “professionally executed” and involved a remotely detonated device.

In a statement released Sunday, the FSB claimed that the detained individual was working under the direction of Ukraine’s intelligence services and had been operating within Russian territory for several weeks. According to preliminary reports, the suspect was allegedly tracking the general’s movements and planted the explosive device days before the attack.

Escalating Tensions
The incident marks one of the most significant cross-border escalations in recent months. The Kremlin has accused Kyiv of carrying out targeted assassinations and sabotage inside Russian territory — a claim Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied.

Ukrainian officials have so far declined to comment on the arrest or the blast, although sources in the region have said that Kyiv has warned Russia against using such incidents as pretexts for increased military operations.

High-Profile Target
The general killed in the explosion is believed to have played a key role in Russia’s operations in eastern Ukraine and was reportedly involved in the coordination of logistics and artillery deployments. His death could represent a significant operational loss for Russia’s southern command.

Ongoing Investigation
Russian state media has released surveillance footage purportedly showing the suspect near the general’s car days before the explosion. The FSB says the investigation is ongoing and that further arrests may follow.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened across several Russian regions, and analysts warn that retaliatory actions could soon follow, further worsening the already volatile Russia-Ukraine conflict.
