Sabarimala Tightens Entry Rules as Pilgrim Crowds Surge
With the annual pilgrimage season witnessing an extraordinary rise in footfall, Sabarimala authorities have introduced stricter regulations to ensure safety, order, and efficient crowd management. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and Kerala Police have jointly announced that daily pilgrim entries will now be capped at 1 lakh, with a separate quota of 20,000 spot bookings available for last-minute devotees.
The move aims to prevent overcrowding at Nilakkal, Pamba, and Sannidhanam, especially during Mandala-Makaravilakku season when lakhs of pilgrims arrive from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and across India.
New Entry Rules for Pilgrims
1. Daily Entry Limit Fixed at 1 Lakh
To streamline crowd flow, the authorities will strictly enforce a maximum of 1 lakh virtual queue bookings per day. Bookings will be confirmed based on time slots to avoid congestion.
2. 20,000 Spot Bookings for Last-Minute Pilgrims
Pilgrims who have not booked in advance can avail 20,000 spot bookings, divided across time slots. These bookings will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis at Nilakkal.
3. Heightened Crowd Monitoring
Authorities have deployed additional police forces, rapid-response units, and AI-assisted surveillance systems to monitor crowd movements.
4. Strict Queue System Enforcement
Devotees are required to adhere to the strict queue line system from Pamba to Sannidhanam. Barricades and RFID checkpoints ensure regulated movement.
5. Vehicle Restrictions
Private vehicles will not be allowed beyond Nilakkal. Shuttle services to Pamba will continue at high frequency during peak hours.
Impact on Pilgrims
The revised entry system is expected to ease congestion, reduce waiting times, and promote a safer pilgrimage experience. Pilgrims are advised to plan early, secure virtual queue slots in advance, and carry essential medical supplies.
