Satya Pal Malik, veteran politician and the last Governor of Jammu and Kashmir before its reorganization, passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 79. He died at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi after battling multiple health complications including lung, kidney infections, and leg and urinary tract infections.

Political Career

Malik’s political journey began in the 1970s as a socialist leader, initially elected from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.

He held several political affiliations including Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Congress, Janata Dal, and finally BJP from 2004.

Served as MLA, Rajya Sabha member twice, and Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh.

Appointed the Governor of Bihar in 2017, with additional charge of Odisha briefly in 2018.

Took over as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018, a tenure marked by significant political developments.

Role in Jammu and Kashmir

Malik was the Governor when the Government of India abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019, revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

This decision led to bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
