‘Dishom Guru’ Shibu Soren Passes Away at 81
Shibu Soren, the iconic tribal leader and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away at the age of 81 in Delhi on August 4, 2025. A towering figure in tribal politics, Soren played a pivotal role in the formation of Jharkhand state and served three times as its Chief Minister.
Hemant Soren: “I Lost Everything Today”
His son, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, confirmed the news and wrote on X:
“Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. I lost everything today.”
Soren had been undergoing treatment for kidney and heart-related ailments at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and had been on life support for over a month.
Political Legacy of Shibu Soren
Known as “Dishom Guru”, or “Guru of the Land,” Soren was respected as a grassroots leader and voice of India’s tribal population.
He began his activism in the 1970s, mobilizing tribal communities for land rights and dignity.
Elected multiple times to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Soren also served as Union Coal Minister.
He was instrumental in the Jharkhand statehood movement, earning widespread reverence for his lifelong advocacy of tribal identity and regional autonomy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and praised Soren’s lifelong commitment to tribal welfare and social justice.
Politicians across party lines paid homage to the man who redefined Jharkhand's political identity and left behind a lasting legacy.

With Shibu Soren’s passing, India loses a pioneer of tribal rights, a state builder, and a political stalwart. His legacy will continue to shape Jharkhand's future and the broader movement for indigenous empowerment in India.
