Sonia Gandhi Slams Centre Over Iran-Israel War Silence: Accuses Govt of "Surrendering Core Values

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Friday lashed out at the Centre for its "deafening silence" on the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, accusing the government of “surrendering India's long-held values of non-alignment and moral leadership on the global stage.”

Addressing a gathering of party workers and foreign policy experts in Delhi, the former UPA chairperson expressed dismay over what she termed the “alarming indifference” of the Modi government towards a humanitarian crisis unfolding in West Asia.

“India was once a voice of reason, peace, and justice in international affairs. Today, our silence on issues like the Iran-Israel war is being seen as a surrender of those very values,” Sonia Gandhi said.

The Congress party has demanded that the government issue a clear statement calling for de-escalation and the protection of civilian lives, aligning with India’s historical stance on peaceful conflict resolution.

Gandhi’s remarks come amid escalating violence in the Middle East, where tensions between Iran and Israel have drawn global concern. While major global powers have issued appeals for restraint, India has so far refrained from taking a firm public stance.

The BJP, meanwhile, dismissed the criticism, stating that the government’s response is based on "strategic diplomacy" and "national interest."

Political analysts see Gandhi's statement as part of a broader Congress attempt to reclaim India’s traditional diplomatic identity, contrasting it with what they call the NDA’s "transactional and ambiguous" foreign policy.
