BENGALURU TECHIE BOOKS ESCORT ONLINE, DOES NOT GET SERVICE BUT LOSES ₹1.4 LAKH TO SCAMMERS
Incident Overview
A 24-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru fell victim to an elaborate online escort service scam, losing ₹1.4 lakh after fraudsters falsely promised companionship but demanded multiple payments through digital platforms without delivering any service. The victim initially contacted alleged escorts via social media and websites, only to be caught in a web of extortion and threats.
How the Scam Unfolded
The techie, based in Central Bengaluru, clicked a Telegram link advertising escort and massage services. He was contacted by a woman claiming to be an escort under the name Ishani Reddy.
The fraudster first demanded a small registration fee (₹299), which was paid digitally to confirm the booking.
Following that, scammers repeatedly made new financial demands: security deposits, activation fees, cancellation charges, GST, and other fabricated fees — each time assuring refunds and service delivery.
The total amount extorted from the victim added up to ₹1.4 lakh after multiple transactions.
When the victim grew suspicious and requested refunds, the contact was abruptly cut off. The victim then faced repeated threatening calls and messages demanding more money.
The man eventually reported the incident to High Grounds police, who have registered a case under the Information Technology Act and are actively investigating the money trail.
Police and Legal Actions
The Bengaluru police warned the public against booking escort services online, emphasizing that many listed websites and social media profiles are fronts for fraudsters.
Authorities have begun freezing the fraudsters' accounts and are tracing culprits using digital forensics.
A senior police official stressed the importance of online caution, noting escort services are illegal in India and such websites often lure vulnerable individuals to extort money.
Precautions and Warnings
Avoid engaging with unverified online escort portals or suspicious social media contacts offering adult services.
Never transfer money upfront without verified credentials.
Report any suspicious or extortionate calls immediately to cybercrime units or local police.
Digital payment apps should be used cautiously, especially when dealing with strangers online.
