The Mango of Knowledge: The Story of Ganesha and Murugan

👑 The Divine Gift

One day, Sage Narada brought a special divine mango to Mount Kailasa. It was no ordinary fruit — it granted eternal wisdom and immortality.

Narada offered the mango to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, but said:

“This fruit must be eaten whole and cannot be shared.”

Not wanting to show favoritism, Shiva decided to test his two sons — Murugan (Kartikeya) and Ganesha — to determine who was worthy of the divine mango.

🏁 The Great Challenge

Shiva told his sons:

“The one who goes around the world three times and returns first will win the mango.”

⚔️ Murugan:

Mounted on his mighty peacock, Murugan immediately flew off at lightning speed, circling the three worlds — Earth, Heaven, and the Netherworld — determined to win.

🐘 Ganesha:

Ganesha, rotund and riding a tiny mouse, paused. He gently smiled, folded his hands, and slowly walked around his parents three times.

Then he said:

“My parents are the whole universe — circling you is as good as circling all the worlds.”

🥭 The Winner

Shiva and Parvati were deeply touched by Ganesha's devotion and wisdom. They declared him the winner and gave him the mango.

When Murugan returned and learned what had happened, he was hurt and disappointed. In some traditions, he withdrew to Palani Hills in Tamil Nadu, vowing to live in solitude and continue his penance.

💡 Moral and Symbolism

Ganesha’s wisdom teaches us that devotion and insight are greater than mere effort and speed.

Murugan’s determination shows the fire of youth and dharma.

This story reflects how even divine siblings learn and grow from each other.
