The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the iconic Sri Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh, has formally requested land from the Assam government to construct a new temple in the state.
If approved, this will mark a major spiritual milestone by bringing Lord Venkateswara’s presence to Northeast India for the first time on such a scale.
Why Assam?
TTD’s temple expansion outside Andhra Pradesh aims to make the deity more accessible to devotees across India. Assam, being a spiritual and cultural hub in the Northeast, offers:
High footfall from local and visiting pilgrims
A strategic link to neighboring states like Meghalaya, Manipur, and West Bengal
Government support for spiritual tourism
TTD has asked for 10 acres of land, preferably near major highways or towns with access to airports and railway stations.
What Will the Temple Include?
Proposed features of the new Sri Venkateswara temple:
Traditional Dravidian-style architecture
Lord Balaji sanctum
Meditation halls & Vedic learning centers
Cultural centers for art, music & seva programs
Annadanam halls and public service wings
The temple could also generate jobs, tourism, and interfaith cultural exchange.
What TTD Said
A TTD spokesperson confirmed that this temple will reflect the board’s mission to bring Balaji’s blessings to all corners of India. The TTD trust board recently approved multiple expansion plans, including temples in Mumbai, Jammu, and now, Assam.
What This Means Spiritually & Culturally
This proposed temple:
Strengthens Hindu cultural identity in the Northeast
Expands the spiritual network of Sri Venkateswara temples nationwide
Builds stronger North-South religious ties
Promotes regional tourism and local development
