Tripura Minister Advocates for Inclusion of Chakma Language in Google Translate
In a significant move to preserve and promote the Chakma language, Tripura's Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the state government is working towards including Chakma language words in the Google Translate platform. This initiative aims to facilitate translation between Chakma and major languages like English, Hindi, and Bengali.
Efforts to Preserve Chakma Language
The Tripura government has already compiled 50,000 Chakma words for this project, with plans to add an additional 50,000 words. The Chakma language is currently taught in 123 government schools across the state, benefiting over 4,000 students from classes I to VIII. Additionally, 172 Chakma-speaking teachers are engaged in these schools.
Celebrating Chakma Language and Script
To further promote the Chakma language, the state government has decided to observe August 7 as Chakma Script and Language Day from next year onwards. This decision reflects the government's commitment to preserving the culture and heritage of the indigenous communities in Tripura.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to develop and promote the languages of all tribes residing in Tripura. The Directorate of Kokborok and Other Minority Languages has been established to support the development of languages like Chakma, Manipuri, and Kokborok.
