TVK Chief Vijay Meets Karur Stampede Victims’ Families at Mamallapuram Resort

Vizzve Admin

A month after the horrific crowd crush at a political rally in Karur, on Monday (27 October 2025) Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), met with the families of the victims. The meeting took place at a resort in Mamallapuram (also spelled Mahabalipuram), near Chennai.

What took place

The stampede occurred on 27 September 2025 during a TVK rally in the Velusamypuram area of Karur district. According to media reports, 41 people lost their lives and more than 50 were injured.

For the meeting in Mamallapuram:

The party booked about 50 rooms in the resort to accommodate families brought in from Karur.

Around 30 – 40 families attended, though some families reportedly opted out citing the 30-day mourning period or other reasons.

The activist meeting was closed-door, with media and larger crowds not permitted. TVK stated this was for privacy and logistical reasons.

During the session, Vijay personally met with many of the bereaved families, conveyed condolences, and reiterated the party’s promise of support.

Why the meeting is significant

It marks the first in-person condolence meeting between Vijay and the affected families.

It occurs amidst growing public and political scrutiny of the rally organisation and the ensuing tragedy.

The move reflects TVK’s attempt to show responsiveness to victims, and to mitigate reputational damage.

Criticism & political fallout

Despite the meeting’s diplomatic intent, criticism emerged:

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) spokespersons argued that rather than bringing families to Mamallapuram, Vijay should have visited Karur and the victims at their homes.

Some social-media users and families questioned the logistics: “Why a luxury resort rather than the affected area?”

Debate continues over accountability, investigations and whether adequate safety protocols were followed at the rally venue.

Context & ongoing investigation

The Karur stampede has triggered:

A criminal investigation by the police and subsequent referral to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Political pressure on TVK and rally organisers regarding crowd-management norms and rally permissions.

Public discourse on event-safety in large political gatherings in Tamil Nadu and beyond.

What this means going forward

The meeting may help heal trust deficits with affected communities—but will not substitute for systemic safety reforms.

TVK will likely be under sustained media/political scrutiny until the investigation is complete and accountability is established.

For victims’ families, practical follow-through (compensation, support, education, health) will be crucial.

For other parties and organisers, the event serves as a reminder of the high stakes of crowd control at mass events.
