Ukraine is once again reeling from a fresh wave of Russian airstrikes, just hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump made a public plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin to “STOP” the attacks.
In what has been described as the deadliest assault on Kyiv since mid-2024, Russian missiles and drones rained down on the Ukrainian capital, killing at least 12 civilians and injuring more than 90 others. The early morning strike left entire neighborhoods in ruins, despite growing international calls for de-escalation.
“Crystal Clear” Plea Ignored
Trump, who has remained vocal about his stance on foreign policy despite being out of office, directly addressed Putin in a recent statement:
“Vladimir, STOP! These attacks must end. It's time for peace.”
The statement, posted across Trump’s Truth Social and picked up by major news outlets, was seen as a rare rebuke of Putin from the former president, who has previously been criticized for his warmer tone toward Russia.
However, Russia showed no sign of slowing its military campaign, launching additional strikes on Kharkiv and Donetsk, including a ballistic missile attack on Dobropillia that killed at least 11 people, including five children.
Peace Talks in Question
While Trump also appeared to place some responsibility on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for refusing to negotiate over Crimea, Ukrainian officials maintain that territorial integrity is non-negotiable.
A rumored U.S.-led peace plan is reportedly in the works, suggesting Russia might keep control of some occupied territories. But European allies are wary, warning that any deal perceived as rewarding Russian aggression could set a dangerous precedent.
Strikes in Zelenskyy’s Hometown
In Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy’s hometown, another strike left four people dead and dozens wounded, damaging homes, schools, and a hotel. Ukrainian emergency services described scenes of devastation and chaos, with rescue teams working around the clock to pull survivors from the rubble.
A Fractured Path Forward
As diplomacy stalls and violence escalates, Ukraine’s government continues to call for stronger international military support, including air defense systems and long-range weapons.
Meanwhile, Trump’s intervention has sparked renewed debate over America’s role in the conflict, the future of NATO, and whether peace is possible without conceding to Putin’s demands.
