Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized digital payments in India. With over 12 billion transactions a month, it's fast, free, and frictionless. However, to ensure better server stability, fraud prevention, and smoother user experience, new UPI rules have come into effect from August 1, 2025.
Whether you use PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or BHIM, these changes affect how you transact daily. Here's a complete breakdown.
1. Balance Check Limit: 50 Per Day Per App
To reduce API congestion, UPI now limits balance enquiry requests to 50 per day per UPI app.
This helps avoid unnecessary server loads.
After every UPI transaction, your account balance will be automatically shown, reducing the need for manual checks.
✅ Tip: Use your balance check wisely. Once you cross the daily limit, you won't be able to check it until the next day.
2. View Bank Account List: Max 25 Times Per Day
The new rule allows users to view their bank account list only 25 times per day per app.
This discourages automated abuse by third-party apps.
Most users rarely use this feature more than once daily.
3. Pending Transaction Status: Capped at 3 Attempts
When a transaction is stuck in pending:
You can now only check the status 3 times, with a minimum 90-second gap between each attempt.
This avoids server spamming and ensures faster resolution.
4. Scheduled Autopay Transactions: Off-Peak Timings Only
If you’ve set up UPI Autopay for EMIs, OTT subscriptions, or utility bills:
They will now be processed only during non-peak hours:
Before 10 AM
1 PM – 5 PM
After 9:30 PM
If a mandate fails, only 3 retries will be allowed per payment cycle.
5. New UPI Users: ₹5,000 Limit on First Day
To prevent fraud and misuse by newly created accounts:
First-time users will have a limit of ₹5,000 per transaction and per day for the first 24 hours.
This temporary limit ensures safety until user verification is stabilized.
6. Inactive UPI IDs Will Be Deactivated
If your UPI ID has not been used for 12 months or more, it will be automatically disabled.
You can still use UPI to pay using your PIN.
But to receive money, you’ll need to re-activate the UPI ID manually.
7. Mandatory Display of Recipient Name Before Payment
Before confirming a UPI transfer:
You will now see the receiver’s registered UPI name and transaction ID.
This avoids mistaken transfers and improves payment transparency.
Why These Rules Were Introduced
These changes are part of a larger effort to:
Improve UPI infrastructure efficiency
Prevent fraud, bot abuse, and misuse
Enhance overall digital payment experience
Reduce transaction dropouts due to overload
UPI is now a financial backbone for India—and these steps will keep it safe, fast, and scalable.
