Following the devastating flash floods triggered by intense rainfall in Uttarakhand on August 5, 2025, rescue and relief operations are underway as state and central teams scramble to assess damage and provide aid.

What Caused the Flash Flood?

Meteorologists cite cloudburst-like conditions with record rainfall in 6 hours. Rapid glacier melt and soil erosion added to the sudden surge in water levels of rivers like the Alaknanda and Mandakini.

Homes damaged: 400+

Roads & bridges washed away: 15+

Crop fields submerged: 1,200+ hectares

Estimated loss: ₹250+ crore (preliminary)

Officials warn that further rain is expected in the next 48 hours, raising the possibility of secondary landslides.

Government Response

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said:

“We are treating this as a high-alert situation. Rescue is our priority, and we are committed to rebuilding the affected areas swiftly.”

An ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh has been announced for families of the deceased. Disaster relief funds and central assistance are being mobilized.
